The General in Charlotte

George Washington was moving north on his way back from a tour of the Southern states when he crossed into Mecklenburg County on May 28, 1791. The tiny village of “Charlottetown” had never before received such a distinguished guest.  Prominent leaders from the area were eager to host Washington and to regale him with stories from the “Hornet’s Nest” where they had caused Lord Cornwallis such grief eleven years earlier. Washington was also taken to the spot where the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence was allegedly signed on May 20, 1775. Apparently, Washington was not very impressed. In his personal diary, he remembered Charlotte as simply being a “very trifling place.”
